The High Priestess Lives Within Each of Us
After the manifested power of The Magician, we now enter the silent temple of The High Priestess. Over the many years I have been reading and teaching tarot, I have come to understand that The High Priestess is perhaps the most misunderstood card in the entire deck. She is not a fortune teller sitting in a dark tent. She is not a mysterious enchantress guarding forbidden knowledge. She is that quiet, wise voice that speaks to you in the stillness between thoughts—the voice of your own intuition.
I have found that in our noisy, action-obsessed world, we have forgotten how to listen to this sacred feminine aspect of ourselves. We have been taught to value doing over being, logic over intuition, answers over questions. But The High Priestess comes to remind us that the deepest wisdom is not found in books or in other people. It is found within, in the silent chambers of our own being.
Think of Isis, the Egyptian goddess of magic and wisdom, who knew all the secrets of the universe. Think of Persephone, who traveled between the worlds of the living and the dead, bringing back deep understanding. Think of the moon goddesses—Selene, Artemis, Hecate—who ruled the mysteries of the night, the cycles of women, and the realm of dreams. These ancient goddesses are not separate from The High Priestess. They are her faces, her expressions, her different ways of speaking to us across time.
The Story of The High Priestess
Let me paint this card for you as I do in my workshops. There she sits, between two great pillars—one black, one white. Boaz and Jachin, they are called, the pillars that stood at the entrance of Solomon's Temple. The black pillar of Boaz represents the feminine, the intuitive, the mystery, the unknown. The white pillar of Jachin represents the masculine, the logical, the known, the manifest. The High Priestess sits exactly between them, perfectly balanced—reminding us that true wisdom comes from holding both polarities, not choosing one over the other.
She wears a flowing blue robe, the color of water, of intuition, of the deep unconscious. Upon her head rests the triple crown—representing the maiden, mother, and crone, the three phases of womanhood, the three faces of the moon. On her chest is the solar cross, symbolizing the union of opposites, the sacred marriage of spirit and matter.
In her lap, she holds a scroll, partially visible. On it, we see the letters TORA. Not TORAH, as it is often mistaken—but TORA, which in Hebrew means "law" or "teaching." But the scroll is only partially revealed. This is The High Priestess's most important teaching: wisdom is not given to us fully formed. We must draw it out from within ourselves, piece by piece, through reflection, through experience, through listening.
Behind her, we see the moon—a crescent moon at her feet, and the full moon behind her head. The moon, our closest celestial neighbor, governs the tides of our oceans and the tides of our emotions. It rules our dreams, our intuition, our subconscious minds. The moon reminds us that just as it has its phases, so do we. We do not need to be full and bright all the time. There is wisdom in the dark phases, in the times of withdrawal and inner reflection.
And look at the pomegranates growing on the veil that hangs behind her—pomegranates, the fruit of Persephone, symbolizing fertility, the underworld, and the cycle of death and rebirth. There are exactly twelve pomegranates visible, representing the twelve signs of the zodiac, the twelve months of the year, the completion of a cycle.
"The High Priestess does not give you the answers. She teaches you how to find the answers within yourself."
What The High Priestess Teaches Us
Psychologically, The High Priestess speaks to our shadow self—the parts of us that we keep hidden, even from ourselves. In my experience, so many of us walk through life disconnected from this deeper aspect. We identify only with our conscious mind, with our logical thoughts, with our public persona. But beneath the surface, there is a vast ocean of wisdom waiting to be discovered.
Jung called this the collective unconscious—the repository of all human experience, of all the archetypes and symbols that speak to us across time and culture. The High Priestess is the guardian of this realm. She sits at the threshold between the conscious and the unconscious, inviting us to cross over, to explore the depths of our own being.
I remember a client who came to me several years ago. She was a successful lawyer, brilliant, logical, at the top of her field. But she was miserable. She kept having the same dream every night—she was lost in a dark forest, and there was a woman calling to her, but she couldn't find her way. When The High Priestess appeared in her reading, we talked about what this might mean. We talked about the parts of herself she had cut off in order to succeed—the intuitive, creative, feeling parts.
Over several months, she began listening to that voice. She started journaling her dreams. She took up painting, something she had loved as a child but abandoned. She eventually left her law firm and became a mediator, helping people resolve conflicts through empathy and understanding rather than through argument and logic. She told me, "I always thought success meant being strong and logical. I had no idea how much strength it takes to be soft and intuitive."
The High Priestess teaches us the power of receptivity. In a world that values action and doing, she reminds us that there is tremendous power in being, in receiving, in simply listening. She teaches us to trust our gut feelings, to honor our dreams, to respect the mystery of not knowing.
Upright High Priestess Readings
When The High Priestess appears upright in a reading, know that this is a profound invitation to go deeper. The universe is saying that the answers you seek are not outside of you—they are within. Let me share with you what this means in different areas of life, drawing on decades of reading experience.
💕 In Love and Relationships
The High Priestess in love readings invites you to go beneath the surface of your relationships. There is more going on than meets the eye. This is a time for deep listening—for listening to your partner, but also for listening to your own heart about what you truly need and want.
If you're single, The High Priestess suggests that the right relationship will come when you are in touch with your deepest self. Don't go searching for someone else to complete you. Become complete within yourself, and the right person will find you. I have seen this happen so many times with my clients.
💼 In Career and Finances
For career questions, The High Priestess is a sign that you need to trust your intuition about your professional path. You may be receiving subtle messages about a change, a new opportunity, or a direction that feels right even if it doesn't make logical sense.
Financially, The High Priestess speaks to hidden resources—not necessarily money, but the inner resources of wisdom, patience, and discernment that will guide you to make the right decisions. Trust your gut about investments and financial choices.
🌟 Spiritual Development
The High Priestess upright is one of the most powerful cards for spiritual growth. Your psychic abilities are heightened. Your dreams are more vivid and meaningful. This is an excellent time for meditation, for journaling, for any spiritual practice that takes you inward.
You may find yourself drawn to study mystical traditions, to explore dreams and symbolism, or to develop your intuitive abilities. Follow that pull—it is The High Priestess calling you to remember who you truly are.
🌙 Inner Growth
For personal growth, The High Priestess is a sign that you are ready to explore the depths of your own being. There may be old patterns, hidden beliefs, or suppressed emotions that are ready to come to the surface to be healed.
This is not a time for forcing change or taking big action. It is a time for being still, for listening, for allowing the wisdom within to rise to the surface naturally. Be patient with yourself. Deep transformation takes time.
Reversed High Priestess Meanings
When The High Priestess appears reversed, I see this not as a failure of intuition, but as a disconnection from intuition. The beautiful receptive wisdom of the upright High Priestess becomes either blocked, ignored, or misused. In my many years of practice, I have observed three primary expressions of the reversed High Priestess.
The Ignored Intuition
The most common manifestation of the reversed High Priestess is simply not listening to that inner voice. You have gut feelings, but you ignore them because they don't make logical sense. You have dreams that are trying to tell you something, but you dismiss them as just dreams. I have seen this lead to poor decisions, unhealthy relationships, and a deep sense of disconnection from self.
A client once came to me with the reversed High Priestess. She had married a man even though her intuition had screamed at her not to go through with it. She told me, "Everyone said he was such a good catch, so I ignored what I was feeling." Within a year, the marriage ended, and she had to rebuild her life from scratch. The reversed High Priestess had been warning her, but she wasn't listening.
The Hidden Secrets
Sometimes the reversed High Priestess indicates that there are secrets being kept—either by others or by yourself from yourself. Things are not as they appear. There is information being withheld, motives being hidden. This is not necessarily a sign of malicious deception. Sometimes we hide things from ourselves because we are not yet ready to face them.
In relationships, this can indicate that your partner is not being fully honest with you, or that you are not being fully honest with yourself about what you need. In work, it can mean that there are behind-the-scenes activities that affect you but that you are not aware of.
The Misused Mysticism
Occasionally, the reversed High Priestess speaks to the misuse of spiritual or intuitive power. This can look like using psychic abilities to control or manipulate others. It can look like becoming lost in fantasy and illusion, disconnected from reality. It can look like spiritual bypassing—using spiritual beliefs to avoid dealing with real emotional issues.
I have seen clients who got so caught up in spiritual practices that they stopped dealing with their real-life problems. They thought if they just meditated enough or visualized enough, everything would be fine. But the reversed High Priestess reminds us that true spirituality means being fully present in this world, not escaping from it.
When The High Priestess Appears In Your Reading
So what should you do when The High Priestess turns up in your reading? First, be still. This is not a time for taking big action or making major decisions. This is a time for listening, for reflecting, for going within.
I always suggest asking yourself these powerful questions when The High Priestess appears:
- What is my intuition trying to tell me that I might be ignoring?
- What secrets am I keeping—from others or from myself?
- Where in my life am I relying too much on logic and not enough on feeling?
- What is coming up in my dreams that I need to pay attention to?
- Where do I need to practice receptivity instead of action?
Working With The High Priestess's Energy
Over the years, I have developed a simple but powerful practice for working with The High Priestess's energy that I share with all my students. It has helped countless clients reconnect with their intuitive wisdom.
I call it the "Moon Listening" practice. For the next full moon cycle (approximately 29 days), create a small ritual each night before bed. Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. Light a candle—preferably silver or white. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take three deep breaths. Then simply ask: "High Priestess, what do I need to know tonight?"
Then just listen. Don't try to make anything happen. Don't force images or thoughts. Just be present in the silence. Whatever comes—even if it seems like nothing—write it down in a special journal. Even if only a word, a feeling, or an image comes, write it down. Over time, you will begin to see patterns, to hear the voice of your intuition speaking clearly to you.
Also, pay special attention to your dreams during this time. Keep your journal by your bed, and write down your dreams immediately upon waking—even if they don't make sense. The High Priestess speaks to us in the language of symbols and dreams, and what seems like nonsense today may reveal its wisdom tomorrow.
Keep The High Priestess's image somewhere you can see it regularly. Let it remind you that you carry deep wisdom within you. Let it remind you that it's okay to not have all the answers. Let it remind you that sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply be still and listen.
"The wisdom you seek is not in books, not in teachers, not in some distant place. It is in the stillness of your own heart. You are The High Priestess. Now listen deeply."
