Stepping Into The Empress's Garden

After the silent wisdom of The High Priestess, we step into the abundant garden of The Empress. Over the many years I have walked the tarot path, I have come to understand that The Empress is perhaps the most beloved card in the entire deck. She does not demand anything of us. She does not test us. She simply invites us to sit with her in her garden, to taste the fruits of life, to remember what it feels like to be fully alive, fully creative, fully nourished.

I have found that in our productivity-obsessed culture, we have forgotten how to receive. We have been taught that worth comes from what we do, not from who we are. But The Empress comes to remind us that life itself is a gift. That abundance is our natural state. That creativity is not something reserved for artists—it is the very breath of life flowing through us.

Think of Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest, who made the earth bloom and the crops grow. Think of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, who taught us to appreciate the sensual pleasures of life. Think of Gaia, Mother Earth herself, who gives endlessly, who nourishes all life without expectation of return. These ancient goddesses are not separate from The Empress. They are her expressions, her different faces, her way of speaking to us across millennia about the sacredness of life.

The Story of The Empress

Let me paint this card for you as I do when I teach workshops. There she sits, upon a throne carved from stone, nestled deep in a lush forest. Around her, life bursts forth in every direction. Golden wheat fields wave in the breeze. Waterfalls cascade down the mountains. Flowers of every color bloom at her feet. This is not a garden that has been forced or controlled. This is a garden that grows naturally, abundantly, because it is rooted in fertile soil and bathed in loving attention.

Upon her head, she wears a crown of twelve stars—representing the twelve months of the year, the twelve signs of the zodiac, the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth. In her right hand, she holds a golden scepter topped with the orb of the world. This is not a scepter of domination or control. It is a scepter of nurturing authority—the kind of authority that comes not from power over others, but from power with life itself.

Look at the cushion upon which she sits—embroidered with the symbol of Venus, the planet of love, beauty, and relationships. And notice her form: she is visibly pregnant, carrying new life within her. This is perhaps The Empress's most profound teaching: we are all pregnant with possibility. Every one of us carries within us seeds of creativity, seeds of new life, seeds of projects and relationships and ways of being that are waiting to be born into the world.

Behind her, the forest stretches as far as the eye can see—ancient, wise, endlessly abundant. A waterfall flows nearby, its waters clear and life-giving. These represent the unconscious, the feminine, the emotional realm that nourishes all of life. The Empress reminds us that true creativity does not come from forcing things to happen. It comes from allowing things to grow, from tending the soil of our lives, from trusting the natural rhythms of growth and manifestation.

"The Empress does not teach us how to do more. She teaches us how to be more fully present to the abundance that is already here."

What The Empress Teaches Us

Psychologically, The Empress speaks to our capacity to nurture—both ourselves and others. In my experience, so many of us walk through life as if we are children who have never been properly mothered. We push ourselves too hard. We don't give ourselves enough rest. We don't feed our bodies or our souls with what they truly need. We are constantly trying to prove our worth through achievement, instead of simply being worthy because we are alive.

The Empress is the good mother we all need. She holds us when we are tired. She feeds us when we are hungry. She celebrates our creativity without judgment. She teaches us that self-care is not selfish—it is sacred. That nourishing ourselves is the foundation upon which all else is built.

I remember a client who came to me several years ago. She was a graphic designer, incredibly talented, but she was completely blocked creatively. She had been working fourteen-hour days, pushing herself to meet deadline after deadline, and she hadn't created anything that felt like "her" in over a year. When The Empress appeared in her reading, I knew immediately what the cards were saying.

I suggested that she take a month off from client work. She looked at me like I was crazy. "But I have bills to pay!" she said. I gently suggested that she at least start with one week—one week of no client work, one week of just playing in her studio, of making art for the sake of making art, of not trying to produce anything "valuable." Reluctantly, she agreed.

At the end of that week, she called me crying. She had started painting again—something she hadn't done since art school. She had planted a garden. She had cooked nourishing meals. She had reconnected with the part of herself that loved creating simply for the joy of it. Within six months, she had launched her own line of art prints, which became far more successful than her client work had ever been. She told me, "I always thought success meant working harder. I had no idea how much more I could create when I started nurturing myself first."

The Empress teaches us the power of fertility—not just the physical fertility of having children, but the creative fertility of ideas, projects, relationships, and new ways of being. She teaches us to connect with nature, to honor our bodies, to celebrate beauty, and to approach life with the open-hearted generosity of one who knows that there is always enough.

Upright Empress Readings

When The Empress appears upright in a reading, know that this is a beautiful sign of abundance, creativity, and fertility in your life. The universe is saying that the seeds you have been planting are ready to bloom. Let me share with you what this means in different areas of life, drawing on decades of reading experience.

💕 Love & Relationships

The Empress in love readings is one of the most beautiful signs you can receive. If you are in a relationship, this indicates a time of deep nurturing, stability, growth. Your relationship is fertile ground—this is a wonderful time to deepen your commitment, to start a family, or simply to enjoy the abundant love you share.

If you're single, The Empress suggests that you are becoming more receptive to love. As you nurture yourself and bloom into your fullness, you naturally attract a partner who can meet you where you are. Focus on becoming the loving partner you wish to attract, and love will find you.

💼 Career & Finances

For career questions, The Empress is a sign of tremendous success and abundance. Your creative projects are blessed with fertile energy. This is an excellent time to launch new ventures, expand your business, or pitch your ideas—the universe is supporting your creative vision.

Financially, The Empress indicates abundance and prosperity. Your hard work is about to bear fruit. This is a good time to invest in things that bring beauty and nourishment to your life. Trust that the universe is providing for all your needs.

🌟 Personal Growth

The Empress upright is a powerful sign of personal transformation. You are stepping into your power as a creative being. Your feminine energy—whether you are male or female—is awakening. This is a time to honor your body, to connect with nature, to nourish yourself deeply.

You may feel a strong urge to create—not necessarily art, but to create a beautiful home, to create nurturing relationships, to create a life that feels abundant and meaningful. Follow that urge. It is The Empress calling you home to yourself.

🌱 Fertility & New Beginnings

The Empress is the card of fertility in all its forms. If you have been trying to conceive, this is a very positive sign. But even if physical pregnancy is not what you desire, The Empress indicates that you are pregnant with possibility.

New ideas are ready to be born. New projects are gestating within you. New ways of being are emerging. Trust the process. Nurture these new beginnings as you would a precious child. Give them time, attention, and love, and they will grow into something beautiful.

Reversed Empress Meanings

When The Empress appears reversed, I see this not as a lack of abundance, but as a disconnection from abundance. The beautiful nurturing energy of the upright Empress becomes either blocked, withheld, or imbalanced. In my many years of practice, I have observed three primary expressions of the reversed Empress.

The Blocked Creativity

The most common manifestation of the reversed Empress is creative block. You have ideas, but you don't trust them. You have a desire to create, but you are afraid of not being "good enough." You have been pushing yourself so hard that your creative well has run dry. I have seen this lead to frustration, resentment, and a deep sense of disconnection from life's joy.

A client once came to me with the reversed Empress. She was a writer who hadn't been able to write anything in two years. She told me, "Every time I sit down to write, I just stare at a blank screen. I feel like I've lost my gift." We talked about how she had been treating her creativity like a machine that should always produce, instead of like a garden that needs rest and nourishment. She started taking walks in nature every day, without her phone. She started journaling just for herself, with no intention of publishing anything. Slowly, the words started flowing again.

The Lack of Nurturance

Sometimes the reversed Empress indicates that you are not giving yourself the nourishment you need. You may be over-giving to others while neglecting your own needs. You may be living on junk food—literally or metaphorically—instead of feeding your body and soul with what they truly crave.

This can also show up as difficulty receiving. You may feel uncomfortable accepting help, compliments, or love from others. You may have a belief that you have to earn everything, that you don't deserve to receive without giving something in return. The reversed Empress comes to remind you that giving and receiving are two sides of the same coin—you cannot have one without the other.

The Overabundance That Becomes Overwhelm

Occasionally, the reversed Empress speaks to an imbalance in the energy of abundance. You may have so many ideas and projects that you feel overwhelmed. You may be trying to tend too many gardens at once, and as a result, none of them are getting the attention they need to thrive.

I have seen clients who started so many creative projects that they ended up finishing none. They were so excited by all the possibilities that they couldn't focus on bringing any one thing to completion. The reversed Empress reminds us that true abundance is not about having more—it is about nurturing what we have with presence and care.

When The Empress Appears In Your Reading

So what should you do when The Empress turns up in your reading? First, celebrate. This is a card of blessing, of abundance, of life affirming itself. Whether upright or reversed, The Empress is an invitation to connect more deeply with the nourishing, creative energy of life itself.

I always suggest asking yourself these powerful questions when The Empress appears:

Working With The Empress's Energy

Over the years, I have developed a simple but powerful practice for working with The Empress's energy that I share with all my students. It has helped countless clients reconnect with their creativity and their capacity to receive.

I call it the "Empress's Garden" meditation. Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take three deep breaths. Imagine that you are standing at the entrance of a beautiful garden. The sun is warm on your skin. Birds are singing. Flowers bloom in every direction. You can smell the rich, fertile soil.

Walk through this garden. Notice what is growing there. Are there healthy, thriving plants? Or are there areas that need attention? Are there seeds that have not yet sprouted? Are there weeds that need to be pulled? Are there areas that need more water, more sunlight, more care?

This garden is a reflection of your inner world—the garden of your life. Spend some time tending it. Pull the weeds of self-doubt and self-criticism. Water the seeds of your creative ideas. Give sunlight to the parts of yourself that have been in shadow. Simply be present with your garden, loving it exactly as it is.

Also, I encourage you to create a physical expression of The Empress's energy in your life. Plant a small garden—even just a few potted plants on a windowsill. Cook nourishing meals with fresh ingredients. Treat yourself to something beautiful—a piece of art, a beautiful piece of clothing, flowers for your table. Take a walk in nature every day, if you can. Let the natural world remind you of the natural rhythms of growth, rest, and renewal.

Keep The Empress's image somewhere you can see it regularly. Let it remind you that you are a creative, fertile being. Let it remind you that abundance is your natural state. Let it remind you to nurture yourself, to receive love, to create beauty, and to celebrate the miracle of being alive.

"You are the garden. You are the gardener. You are the seed. Nurture yourself, and everything you desire will bloom in its perfect time."
